GM Arthur Dake Memorial Open: April 11-12, 2026

Arthur Dake is the only Grandmaster to have been born and raised in Portland. Numerous articles about his life and some of his games can be found online.

Format: 5-round Swiss in two sections, 1600+ and U1600. Players within 200 rating points of the cutoff may play up for a $10 fee. The official US Chess OTB regular ratings are generally used. Up to two half point byes are available if requested before round one.

Time Control: G/60;inc30 (sixty minutes per player with thirty seconds added for each move). Bring an increment capable digital clock. Some digital clocks are provided at this tournament but please do not always rely on the club to provide a digital clock (boards, pieces, notation sheets, and pens/pencils are provided).

Schedule: On-site registration runs from 9-9:45am. The rounds are at 10am, 1:45pm, and 5:30pm on Saturday and 10am and 1:45pm on Sunday. Rounds 3 and 5 can be started earlier if both players agree. Players who have a game go long can request extra time off before the next round.

Entry Fee: $40, $30 for Portland Chess Club members. Free entry for titled players, (NM and above); the entry fee is deducted from prizes won. Pay during on-site registration with cash, check payable to the Portland Chess Club, or PayPal at email@pdxchess.org.

Prizes: $1000 based on 40 paid entries (adjusted proportionally if there are a different number of players except $500 is guaranteed). 1600+ Section: 1st-$185, 2nd-$145, 1st U2000-$110, 1st U1800-$100; U1600 Section: 1st-$150, 2nd-$120, 1st U1400-$100, 1st U1200-$90. Unrated players are eligible for all of the prizes. Prizes are combined and split if there is a tie.

Qualifiers: The 1600+ section is a qualifier for the Challengers section of the Oregon Closed. To be a qualifier, Oregon residents in the 1600+ section are required to have state (Oregon Chess Federation) membership and this can be purchased during on-site registration. Notes: 1) While this tournament is open to scholastic players, it’s only recommended for mature scholastic players who are capable of playing in a serious tournament and against adults. 2) This tournament uses the rules from the 7th edition of the US Chess rulebook. 3) State membership is not required in the U1600 section and is not required from non-Oregon residents in the 1600+ section.
